PDFcreator from pdfforge (hxxp://www.pdfforge.org/ in conjunction with hxxp://www.sourceforge.net) is an open source freeware PDF virtual printer resource for Windows.

Many years ago, I researched virtual PDF printers and found this to be the best.  They recently changed from version 0.9.x to 1.0.

You can "print" from any application to a PDF file instead of wasting paper (and helps you organize and store information in folders for the future).  In addition to creating a single "print" file, you can "collect" many pages and subsequently combine them into one PDF file of many pages.

The program's HELP files are available in English, French and German.

              Just an addition:

Open office (writer) offers a M$-Word alternative Office system (free) and also a pdf creation possibility. All in all Open Office is a better (and cheaper) alternative to M$ office and can also import (and export) from/into M$ office formats.
