HIV and Rimming
-
Okay, so I have recently starting talking to a guy who is HIV undetectable, and not as familiar with the virus as I probably should be. So on top of researching on my own I wanted to ask, what are if any dangers of rimming someone with the virus!! This is one of my favorite parts of sex, and even though I will be using protection for the penetration, I want to know more about the foreplay. Thanks.

First, I commend you for being a responsible adult and taking the proactive approach regarding your own health.
Second, back in the day I conducted outreach, testing and counseling in the State of Florida. It is my understanding you are reasonably safe as long as there are no open wounds; however, penetration/friction can cause small tears in the mucous membranes of the anus/rectum. If you have any open sores in your mouth (brushing your teeth, gums, etc. prior to rimming you too may have small tears in mucous membranes) this is where the spread MAY be possible. I consider it fairly safe activity. I am not up-to-date on my education and training. Also, I have not maintained my certification in this subject. As a matter of fact, the Web site AIDS.gov states "The risk of getting HIV by giving or receiving oral stimulation to the anus (your mouth on someone’s anus, also called “anilingus” or “rimming”) is low, but it is not zero risk." You can read more on this information at https://www.aids.gov/hiv-aids-basics/prevention/reduce-your-risk/sexual-risk-factors/ .
I hope this information helps in your quest to make responsible decisions. -
As someone who has been living with HIV for nearly 6 years now I can tell you that the chances of getting HIV through something like rimming are negligible at best to begin with assuming that you have no open sores and such. That being said, the risk of contracting HIV from someone who is undetectable in any format has yet to be seen. Thus far there has yet to be even ONE documented case of HIV transmission from a person who is undetectable.
Simply put, for many reasons, you have nothing to be afraid of.
EDIT: Just a quick side-note…. There is also the whole enzyme in saliva that kinda neutralizes HIV itself, so even your risks for oral contact of any sort are damn near non-existent. If you're interested in knowing more, please either reply here or PM me. I'd be more than happy to give you all the pertinent information.
