Some denim ads promise sex appeal, some popularity, others… threesomes?
That's what many people think this latest racy Calvin Klein Jeans billboard is inferring. The Soho-situated ad, from the company's Spring/Summer 2009 campaign, is creating quite a stir on the corner of Lafayette and Houston streets in NYC.
Considering that the company's even-more sexually charged television commercial, which was shot by famed photographer Steven Meisel, was banned in the United States, it's no wonder that photos -- several stories tall -- of the same nature might have New Yorkers and tourists alike up in arms, with some even calling the image "borderline pornographic."
According to NY Mag, CK designers are loving the risque ad. Italo Zuchelli, who won Menswear Designer of the Year at the CDFAs, even called it his "favorite campaign ever!"
You can watch the 30-second spot on the calvinkleinjeans.com (NSFW). And while the U.S. censors think the commercial is too hot to handle, Italy, France, Spain and Germany will air the ad.
Eva Mendes recently appeared on a provocative Calvin Klein fragrance billboard in Times Square, and her commercial was also banned from U.S. programming.
When asked for comment, a Calvin Klein spokesperson told wcbstv.com the "intention was to create a very sexy campaign that speaks to our targeted demographic."
So, the big question: If the video's been banned, is the billboard next?

The billboard is hot, but the video is dull almost to the point of being Victorian. Thirty seconds of three different (heterosexual) couples kissing is not my idea of "too hot to handle."
I guess the interracial couple (black guy, white woman) is what has Americans so upset.
Some day, it will be okay for a black man to kiss a white woman on the lips in America. And a thousand years after that, maybe two men will be allowed to hold hands in public in America.

Did Calvin Klein Replace Billboard Because of Public Outcry?
The Calvin Klein denim billboard that caused quite a stir last week has come down. In its place is the new Calvin Klein swimwear ad, featuring Dutch supermodel Doutzen Krous emerging from the surf.
While the new ad could be perceived as equally provocative, the "New York Daily News" polled passers-by and the consensus was much more favorable, from "I do like the bathing suit" to "This one is brilliant!"
Krous is currently the face of Calvin Klein swimwear and has appeared in the company's campaigns since 2005.
While one might think CK caved to the outrage, some calling the jean billboard "borderline porn," we think it might have just been a case of good timing: Summer's officially here, and the new swimwear ads, all starring Krous, have been popping up in magazines this week.
Who knows? We think Calvin Klein must be loving all the attention! Either way, the controversial image(s) brought the brand back into the media (and consumers' minds).

Hmm… do something that will bring people running to see your billboard, then put an ad on it for something you want to sell. Isn't this called "marketing", folks?
It reminds me of an incident a few years ago, in a park that had developed a reputation for, well, let's just say it had a reputation. Someone set fire to a car in the parking lot, let it burn down, and didn't bother to remove the remains. Visitors to the park would make up their own stories, and leave. There were car parts still in the same place over 6 months later, and most of the previously-regular visitors were going elsewhere.
Another successful publicity stunt.
