Scotland finally announces a date for gay marriages
-
Starting on 31 December 2014, gay marriages can take place in Scotland. HOWEVER, you will need to register 15 days in advance (starting on 16 December 2014), the same with hetero marriage and civil partnerships.
Anyone who wants to convert a civil partnership to a marriage without a ceremony can do this starting on 16 December 2014. This is supposed to be free for the 1st year, but only if your civil partnership was dated on or before 15 December 2014.
Depending on where you live, you may need to make an appointment. This is true in larger areas.
If you plan on doing it right way, call at least 1 week in advance to make sure they ordered and received the correct paperwork.
It works out great, 16 December is my mom's birthday and she's a homophobe, so you know what my partner and I will be doing.

Great news. My partner and I are in a civil partnership, so plan to convert up. We live in Australia, so I checked and foreign embassies and consulates can do the conversion too. ;D

I should also point out that there is some debate on exactly which date an administratively converted civil partnership to marriage will use. From my understanding, it should be the date you originally got your civil partnership and not the date of the changeover, but some have said this isn't the case.
Converting from a civil partnership to a gay marriage through a marriage ceremony will be dated on the day of the marriage ceremony. This isn't disputed.
Gays will still be able to get civil partnerships, but understand that with the UK (except Northern Ireland) having gay marriage, you probably won't be entitled to the same rights internationally as you would have with a marriage.
