Squeezing other people out
-
I suspect I know, or should know, the answer to this.
I'm lucky that my ratio is above requirements.
I usually seed to around the 1.0 mark.. because that's what we do.
My question is if I seed to a lot more than that do I stop someone improving their ratio. Does my excess mean there is less sharing for other people?
Logic suggests that if I 'over-seed' someone else's post, I'm being selfish. Not much I can do about my own posts.
And with that conundrum, I will get back in my box

If we leave out from the equitation the upload generated by exchange of seed bonus points and through ratio cheating, only what is downloaded can be uploaded and vice versa. Upload = Download.
Therefore if someone is uploading much more than he downloads, it means at the same time that others will have to upload less than they downloaded. In this sense, extreme high share ratios aren't desirable (mine could for example been seen as too high).
There are other aspects to consider though, for example:
-
Some members spend considerable storage size, computer running time and internet access bandwidth to keep old torrents available for years. This isn't "free" of cost and the resulting share ratio hardly earned.
- Prolific uploader of own new torrents will mechanically improve their share ratio, because on these they haven't downloaded anything and generate only upload
Both examples show, that a high share ratio isn't necessary the result of "bad" behaviour and could be called "overseeding" in the sense of doing too much.
My experience as moderator shows that in most cases of ratio issues, it is a misunderstanding of how ratio works and the required seeding durations vs download durations.

Logic suggests that if I 'over-seed' someone else's post, I'm being selfish.
When you seed to others, you are in effect reselling to them what you have previously bought (downloaded). This resale depends on your bandwidth, which may change in comparison to others over time, as seeders and leechers with improved bandwidth join and leave the torrent. Continuing to seed beyond a ratio of 1.0 (meaning you have resold to others the entire cost of the torrent you bought) does not necessarily mean that you are being selfish.
Management of the torrent's swarm is determined by the tracker itself in conjunction with the individual torrent clients. Since BitTorrent systems favor efficiency over fairness, that merely means whatever amount you have seeded was because your connection was the most efficient available at the time, in comparison to others in the swarm.

Thanks to both of you - both answers were helpful to me :ok2:
