Brighton has become the first UK town to officially ban all licensed premises from playing anti-gay or hate lyrics.

Venues in the popular city, which has a large gay population, can be stripped of their licence if they stage gigs or play records which include homophobic lyrics, or lyrics inciting hatred against ethnic minorities.

The ruling by the city's council is expected to largely affect dancehall artistes such as Buju Banton, who was barred from playing in the seaside city last year.

OutRage! and other gay campaigners have led a campaign against several dance hall artistes, for singing songs which advocate the murder of gay men in their music. The three-year Stop Murder Music campaign brought about the cancellation of hundreds of concerts and sponsorship deals, costing the artistes and their managers more than £2.5m.

To be clear, the name of the city is officially Brighton and Hove.

The ban doesn't apply to the radio, tv, jukeboxes, etc.

For anyone who doesn't know, BBC radio pulled the song "Fairytales of New York" by the Pogues because of the phrase "yer a cheap, lousy faggot" saying it was anti gay and also the term "slut" for being anti women. Then beeped out the 2 offending words. The British public were nuts over beeping out faggot, saying it's a common insult, so it should be left in.

The irony is that the BBC will not allow songs with certain words, like nigger, paki, cunt, ect because they are deemed offensive, yet they have now signaled that the word faggot isn't offensive.

Many UK forums tried defending allowing the word by claiming it was a type of meatball common in the Midlands or a bundle of sticks. Another defense of the word was that in southern Ireland, it meant bitter old woman nearly 200 hundred years ago.

Sadly, this is all a crock of shit because even the lead singer of the Pogues admits that the word is used as an insult referring to gay men.

And? Are you telling me you are actually hurt or traumatised in any way by the song? Why stop at faggot? "Fatty", "shorty", "baldie" - these are all negative terms that horribly slander particular individuals in the community.

Ban everything that is offensive in this world and then we can all rejoice safely in our lovely little bubble-wrapped land…

No, I actually like the song.

My point is about the hypocrisy of the BBC ruling/decision.

If the word was nigger, paki, cunt, kike, etc, they would not have even attempted to bleep the word out, the song would have been banned outright. They also would not have backed down to the pressure of the public on the issue.
