Hello rufty,
The rmvb extension is one of the newer formats for Realmedia player. The files can be viewed with newer versions of Realmedia Player, downloaded for free from www.real.com/realplayer.html

To be a pedant, avi is just the container and not the compressor.
-
True.
It's still the same, you don't get the horrible fuzziness with avi files that you do with rmvb files.
-
Not strictly true - it will depend on what codec is being used to compress the video in the AVI file. Though, it's a given that AVI files generally use open source and popular codecs like Xvid, which before x264 was about the best you could get for net downloads.
Real software is closed source and commercial. I think Real are more concerned with spyware and sales than actually creating a decent codec. No wonder they constantly update….

And don't forget that Real Buffering Player is a tool made by the devil… Buffering Besides I think VLC and Mplayer classic can handle Buffering rmvb-files.

For viewing Realmedia files I'm using Real Alternative. You can read about it here: hxxp://www.codecguide.com/about_real.htm
