General Educational Thread for External Harddrives/Data Storage
-
I like collecting porn. However it gives me so much stress thinking about the possibility that something will go wrong and all the hours and effort put into it will all disappear in a blink of an eye. Im an absolute tech rookie- whenever I try to learn more about technology on the internet I just feel so lost. There's so many technical words and things said that I have no idea what it means. So please take that into consideration for some of my questions.

What is the best way to collect porn files (images and videos)? Would it be through external harddrives? I also heard something about a Cloud. The only clouds I understand are the ones floating in the sky  … Which one is more reliable? Is there privacy in storing files on a cloud? What are the prices?

Whats the best harddrive to buy/best...cloud??? I sound so stupid to myself typing that. Is it dumb to buy harddrives on sites like wish.com- or other sites that are second hand?

What causes hardrives/clouds to fail, to corrupt, to lose data/files? Do I need to store my hardrives in a particular way- in a shelf/in a cool place/out of light? I read something about hardrives not working after falling- which has happen to my ones lol. What are some signs your hardrive/cloud is deteriorating? Which hardrives are the best for protecting files? What can you do to prevent these things from happening? My hardrives now whenever I use them- I have to restart the laptop in order to be able to safely remove it (if I have used the harddrive then right clicking on the usb icon and trying to eject it always comes up with the trying to remove usb thats currently in use please close down stuff thats using it error message- even when Ive clearly closed everything). Is this a sign that my external hardrive is deteriorating and what can I do to fix it?
-
Should I have duplicates of my files- like storing files on two seperate external hardrives? this might sound stupid but should it be on two different brands of external hardrives- my logic in this is that maybe if a certain brand suffers from a specific issue then thats okay because your other external hardrive might not suffer from that issue (because its a different brand) and you will only lose one copy of your files? are there strategies like this that are smart for backing up your files?
