Three-quarters of the world's people live in countries that either restrict the right to religion or belief or have "a high level of social hostility involving religion or belief," the U.N. special investigator on religious rights said Tuesday.
Ahmed Shaheed told the General Assembly's human rights committee that religious intolerance is prevalent globally — and rising around the world.

Though I respect the UN, I think on the issues of freedom of religion and freedom from discrimination on the basis of religion, the UN has got it wrong. The UN attempts to assert that there is no hierarchy among human rights, but would any sane person agree with the statement : "a religiously motivated racist should be exempt from any law that prevents racial discrimination because it places a restriction on religion freedom" ?
Religion is a choice. Gender, race, age, sexuality are not. I would not refuse to employ someone simply because they are Christian, Muslim, Hindu etc.. but if I learned that a person disapproved of me because of my sexuality based on their religious beliefs, even if I just learned it from their personal social media, they would be out the door in a second.
Some religious beliefs are unacceptable in modern, tolerant, diverse society. If you choose to believe those things about other people, you live with the consequences of your choices. Those consequences may well include unemployment or worse.

That would be illegal in most of the west.
Even in countries that include both sexual orientation and religion in their non-discrimination laws, religion is given a much higher priority than sexual orientation. Non-discriminiation laws allow believers to refuse to hire gays in certain areas, but gays have no such allowances, even when the person wanting to be hired is telling you that his religous beliefs say you should be killed for being gay.

Yes, and I think that is wrong. Religious beliefs are a choice. Sexuality isn't. It is exactly the same as saying that a racist should be exempt from anti-racial discrimination law. If you want to discriminate against gay people, just join a Christian group.
I think and hope that as more religious groups embrace LGBT+ people, have gay clergy, celebrate gay weddings, the homophobes will be less able to justify themselves by using their religion as an excuse.
