      Hi everyone - does anyone here torrent from a NAS?  Keen to ask some more questions, such as:

      1. Which client are you using on the NAS?
      2. Which clients allow you to create .torrent files from the NAS directly - as I can't seem to get mine to do it!
      3. Does anyone else have problems seeding from the NAS?  My ratio has declined continuously since I moved everything over to that NAS I'm using… 😞
      4. My current client (qBittorrent from LinuxServer.io) won't allow me to put files back into the download directory and start seeding them again... so I get requests all the time for old torrents that I have the files for... but I can't reseed them 😞

      Any help at all would be really appreciated!

        Depends which NAS system you use.

          This may not be helpful to you, but I'll answer your questions.

              Transmission

          2. Which clients allow you to create .torrent files from the NAS directly - as I can't seem to get mine to do it!
              I don't use any clients from the NAS directly to create .torrent files.  I use QTM to generate the .torrent.  Once created, I remove the torrent automatically added to µTorrent.  Then, I add the torrent to my NAS client, being careful to point it to the directory where the file(s) I want to upload exist.  The client verifies the media, then begins seeding.

          3. Does anyone else have problems seeding from the NAS?  My ratio has declined continuously since I moved everything over to that NAS I'm using… Sad
              I've always had trouble seeding.  My downloads far outstrip my uploads.  Even when I do freeleech, I can't keep up.  I'm making progress by uploading media.  I haven't noticed any issues with seeding my own stuff.

          4. My current client (qBittorrent from LinuxServer.io) won't allow me to put files back into the download directory and start seeding them again... so I get requests all the time for old torrents that I have the files for... but I can't reseed them Sad
              I'm not using qBittorrent, so I don't have any suggestions for you in order to remedy the situation.  I will tell you about my setup.

          Synology 918+ NAS running Docker.

          • OpenVPN container
          • Transmission (torrent) container NOTE: The Transmission container is linked to the OpenVPN container.  If the OpenVPN connection fails or is terminated, Transmission loses Internet connection, too.  This prevents unencrypted torrent communication.
          • QTM torrent creator
          • Media is organized in Plex media library.  Any files I want to seed are in this library.  In order to seed, I add the .torrent file to Transmission and point it to the directory where the file is located.  Transmission verifies that the file is complete, and begins seeding.

            rayban099: That's hugely helpful… I loved Transmission from my Mac, but when I was setting up my NAS last year, I don't know why but I didn't find it great to set up Transmission on the NAS.  I would much prefer it to qBittorrent (which has a TERRIBLE webUI).

            I also have Docker installed - is your Transmission client from the SynologyCommunity group?

            I would absolutely LOVE to be able to point my torrent client to a directory where something is stored... ATM qBittorrent only allows me to download/seed from one directory (/downloads) which drives me nuts...

              I've installed the linuxserver/transmission image in Docker.  This image of Transmission is generic (not specific to a particular device or OS) and is updated regularly.  I've mapped my host media volumes into the Docker Transmission volume.  From the perspective of Transmission, the host volumes belong to Transmission.  It can read/write any mapped volumes.  If you're not familiar with Docker, start here.  (https://docs.docker.com/get-started/).  It took me a good 3 months to become comfortable with Docker enough to configure VPNs, Bit Torrent clients and whatnot.  But, once you've got it under your belt, it's awesome.  All of my media related activities (NZBs, Torrents) happen within Docker containers behind a VPN that prevent any activity from occurring if the VPN goes down.  I don't use any of the SynologyCommunity apps, now.  Since they are specific to Synology, they tend to fall behind when it comes to updates.

              Besides walking you through the Docker learning curve I'm happy to help in any way I can.

                Thank you SO much - it's been driving me nuts.  I realise you are probably taking time to expedite my own experience gaining on this… so I really appreciate your time on this.

                Is there a guide to the setup of Transmission anywhere?  I can install the image from Linuxserver (that's great, I know that one! Haha!).  But looking for a setup guide for it...
                Looking here: https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/transmission - I'm thinking I need to set a folder for Watch, a folder for Config and a folder for Downloads.  Might I ask how you did these?  I would love my setup to be as yours... I have a bunch of different folders (I try to be organised!) and qBittorrent has meant that it can only see the /Downloads folder (and not even sub-folders... you just add a torrent and it downloads to /Downloads  :-[ - no sub-folder selection at all...).

                I've got a VPN (IPVanish) - but I gave up using it as my downloads and uploads would frequently stop... if I disconnected and reconnected from the VPN, then restarted the qBittorrent docker image, all the torrents would run again... it was frustrating!  And I never managed to track down what the issue was.  Anyway, the VPN is there... so would be great to use it (for the reason you are!).

                  I've sort of cheated with my uploading… I set my max uploads to 2500 torrents and now I'm uploading 1,224 of them... meaning I'm finally getting some ratio back!  But that's still within qBittorrent... so I keep getting asked to reseed things and it just... won't 😞
