Beach Rats, any honest thoughts about it?

I tried to watch it but I can't stand it. Slice of life slowness. Had to fast forward sometimes but then I couldn't continue and had to stop. I did go see the ending though.
Just to spoil, did the weed guy die? He got punched and dropped into the sea. Did he drown?
Also, Frankie only met with… 3 men?
- guy who topped him on the beach
- married bartender in a motel
- oral on the beach
I didn't get to watch his family drama stuff but he met mostly with older men because he's looking for paternal attention?
He didn't really do anything with the other two
- chatted online in the beginning
- weed guy which ended badly
So what's the significance of the ending? He's just watching the fireworks and then what? I'm annoyed at those kinds of endings.

'Beach Rats' neatly fits the tired and restrictive 'LGBT' label by conforming to many of its trademarks, such as self-loathing and confused gay men that simply wish to belong, gays being betrayed by other gays, gays getting beat up, macho blokes, predictable plots and clichéd characters, nudity, homoerotic soft-porn visuals and drug taking.
