Jennifer Lawrence's New Film (Mother!) Horrifies Critics
-
A CinemaScore of F is truly horrific. Most people are claiming that Darren Aronofsky made a tactical error by marketing this movie as a paranormal horror when the actual movie does not resemble a horror/thriller. The reviews seem rather polarised, and Paranormal is worried that they will make a financial loss over this movie. This is big, considering Lawrence's usual success and Aronofsky's positive reputation.

Without spoiling too much, what do you think was the movie's main issue? The acting? The plot?

People don't think in allegory. Those that can see what the director was doing see it as pretentious. Others might think on it too much as a political statement and so dismiss it as political. I think mainstream folk walked in expecting a gross-out horror film and got an art film instead.
The movie is visually stunning and worth seeing if you like art house cinema.

I feel like I wasted money seeing this film because it truly was pretentious. It wasn't an action film like the Fast & Furious films so my partner was fighting sleep as usual, but I tried to give it a chance but it came off as cheesy and too obvious at times. This was a horrible attempt at allegory and I understand why the critics gave it such bad ratings. The cheesiness ruined any chance of this film becoming a classic. The acting and overall physical production of the scenes were refreshing though. I love Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris, so I'm a little biased with praising the acting ;D

I enjoyed it. It made me think. It made me uncomfortable. I have random thoughts about it weeks after having seen the film.
On the other hand I never thought it was going to be any kind of horror/thriller and I certainly wasn't expecting any action. I understood walking in to the cinema that it was a Daren Aronofsky film and I kind of had an idea of what that meant.

See member cteavin personal opinion about this film and I totally agree with him. The acting was not the main issue coz casts are all good and Jennifer Lawrence might be nominated in this film. People are expecting an outright horror film and they felt disappointed, but give this movie a try coz it's good
