Dark Matter was recommended to me today by someone who usually recommends great shows.
It sounds good, I'm going to check it out tonight.

Dark Matter is very good and starting it's second season, as is Killjoys, again entering it's second season as well. Both are very good shows and plenty of eye candy as well

"The Expanse" is one of the best Science Fiction TV series every shown, the other three being the original "Star Trek", Babylon 5", and the "Stargate" series. (Well, you can add in there "The Twilight Zone"" with regards to anthology series.)
"The Expanse" is based on a series of novels and short stories written by James S. A. Corey (actually 2 authors) and actually follow the novels very faithfully. The first novel "Leviathan Wakes" was told in the show's 1st and first-part of the 2nd seasons. The start of the second novel, "Caliban's War", was adapted in the second-half of the 2nd season.
Both "Dark Matter" and "Killjoys" are also very enjoyable, but are less Science Fiction science fiction series (not a criticism). They have both had 2 seasons and will be starting their 3rd ones in 2018.
These three shows have not done overall that well in the ratings. However what is allowing them to continue is that there are multiple productions companies involved in more than one nation, so overall the (dedicated) viewership makes production of them worthwhile.
There is also "Sense 8" which just started its 2nd season, another excellent Science Fiction series. It's producers are The Wachowskis (of "The Matrix") and J. Michael Straczynski of "Babylon 5". (ASIDE: The Wachowskis are not longer "The Wachowskis Brothers" since both are now MTF women.)
"Sense 8" has both a gay male and a MTF transgender characters. It is somewhat stylized in telling its story, but that is because it is a difficult story to tell visually, as it is of the formation of a group mind. (This is not like Trek's Borg, which is a hive mind. A group mind is where a number of people share conscious, but retain their individual identities.) It is just starting its 2nd season now. Before that, there was a 1st season and a Christmas Special(!).
(I know a good deal about Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror in general and in detail. I have long been involved, directly and indirectly, in the various fan communities of these genres.)

Why hasn't Doctor Who been mentioned yet? Start at season 9 for the reboot. Helmed by Russel T Davies, creator of Queer as Folk.
Torchwood was good too, of course. With gay guys being more prominent.
Matt Smith was the sexier Doctor as the 11th but I didn't like his season as much as I liked David Tennant's as the 10th.
12th as Capaldi is… ok. Pink the teacher is kinda hot. The new companion is suppose to be a lesbian.

Sci fi makes me think of Stargate, both the series and the movie even when they're not ongoing atm, and just as JerodParker said, Doctor Who.

Right now, I think the highest quality SF on air is the Expanse, which people have mentioned. Dark Matter is fun, but a bit more like an updated version of classic TV-scifi, same goes for KillJoys, it feels a bit like a throwback to the 90s and early 2000s. They're decent shows, but the Expanse has them beat as far as budget goes.
Twin Peaks made a comeback… sort of kind of science fiction if you squint real hard...
If you want the classics which you don't:
Farscape
Australian/American mix, it's got comedy, it's got weird aliens, MUPPETS, and it's got a smoking hot main character in Crichton. (Those leather pants.... ooooooh those leather pants)
Babylon 5
You'll have to bite through the shoddy 90s cgi and acting, but the story is amazing!

The Expanse
Also, Stargate Atlantis. Shame it was cancelled. I wanted to know what was happening

Black Mirror
but its too sad and make me upset
