Crappy upstream
-
Hi guys:
I enjoy this service a whole lot, but I can't help it that my ISP is forcing a 30kbps upstream limit on me. I can download up to 1.5mbps, but my upstream is going to forever hinder my ratio
Anyone know how to uncap a cable modem? I could on the modem I had before, but the 5100 Motorola Surfboard seems impenetrable.

While there is some software that can {or at least claim to} "increase" your speeds, there is no way to physically increase the speeds without your ISP finding out.
I have yet to find any software that has really done any improvements on my speeds and 2 bits of software that slowed it down.

Before I sold my original modem (I think it was a Surfboard 4800), I successfully uncapped my modem from 30kbps all the way up to 256kbps. It was awesome. My ISP is a small, po-dunk cable ISP, and I ran uncapped for two years, before I moved away to college, and sold my modem to a classmate since I had DSL at my apartment.
How I wish I still had that modem.
The 5100 however, seems pretty well locked down. :-l

Even if you had that modem I doubt that you could uncap your upload stream. Here's why: Cable ISPs 'cap' or limit speed for a number of reasons. First of all, such caps make it easier for cable modem ISPs to distribute bandwidth among users. The upload cap in particular is intended to discourage users to run big servers. In general, these caps are also put in place to make the system more robust. At slower speeds, packet loss is usually lower and the system can handle worse signal quality.
So how do I uncap your modem? You don't. The speed limit is enforced at the head end. Short of hacking into the head end computer there is no way you could increase this limit yourself. Some cable modems may have serial ports or other ways to change various settings. However, in order for the upload/download speed to change, you will have to reboot the modem after making that change. The problem is, that as soon as you reboot the modem, them modem will contact the head end computer to authenticate itself and it will download the latest settings, including speed limits.
We all have the same complaint about uploading and ratio requirements. For the restrictions noted above, it would be to the betterment of the website if the administrator would offer a less restrictive ratio requirement policy - but I don't see that happening here. To (temporarily) increase your ratio numbers here you can push the donate button - which, of course, is why the current ratio quotas are in effect.

We all have the same complaint about uploading and ratio requirements.
Personally I have no problem with the ratio limit. Without people sharing then we wouldn't have this site, and as someone that uploads (A LOT) I need other people to continue sharing my uploads after I have uploaded them to 3 - 4 people otherwise I can't share anything else. If we didn't have a min ratio requirements then about 90% of user would not seed, this means less people would share (I know I wouldn't).
again personal opinions differ and this is just mine.

The ratio limits are to encourage fair sharing vs hit and running. BT only works if everyone shares data.
We often get questions like; "How can I make sure I don't seed anymore than the minimum required ratio?" I tell them that that idea defeats the purpose of BT and that they should look for direct download sites instead.

Hello all.
With reference to this topic, I also have a 30Kb/s upload limit but with a 2Mb/s download limit.
When I first joined this site 9 weeks ago I made the mistake of downloading alot of films very quickly as a result my ratio ended up at less than 0.25. However with various problems - both personal and computor, I ended up not using this site as I should and my download rights where taken away (All's fair - BUT I could not seed the films that I had downloaded, because of tracker issues, and I could not download new torrents).
So I had to take the only road possible to increase my ratio and that was to upload - something I was reluctant to do because it seemed so complicated, and slow. However after reading the guides I spent an hour or so and uploaded my first film.
At this moment in time I am seeding my ELEVENTH film in two and a half weeks, my ratio is over 2 and I've uploaded
nearly 20G. (Not that I am trying to blow my own trumpet, but there are points to what I am explaining.)I know it is an old comment, but 'It's not what you've got it's what you do with it that counts'.

Keep your computor running as long as possible. Mine is on virtualy 24/7 (obviously with the monitor off when I am not using it!).
-
Keep your BitTorrent client running the same. I am using uTorrent - fast, without zapping memory.
-
When 'surfing', stop/pause/reduce downloads and reduce upload to half ie 15Kb/sec. Doesn't effect your surfing speed plus it also helps your ratio.
-
Use time effectively, during the time I am asleep/at work, I continue uploading and use this time to convert downloaded films (ie avi/mpg/wmv's to dvd's).
-
NEVER allow unlimited up/downloads, set speed to a maximum of 90% of your bandwidth. Downloads need upload bandwidth, if you use unlimited download, your downloads will prevent/reduce your upload capability.
-
REMEMBER although it is good to be able to download a film you want now, is it really life or death?, DO NOT download more than five films at once (that is just geedy!-you can only watch one at a time! Also if there are other uploaders/leechers they will be taking off you and thus slowing you down).
-
If you have got any films from elsewhwere UPLOAD!, (obviously after checking they are not already on this site). It is quicker to upload one film @30Kb/s than it is to seed, for example, three films @5Kb/s.
-
Pay back 100%+. The reason for the 0.35 rule is obvious. If you download 10G and only upload 3.5G (using the minimum) someone, somewhere has put in 6.5G. That is their time and effort, not to mention financial costs, that you have stolen (for want of better words). We are all getting these films at someone else's cost be fair to them and pay back.
If people use this site properly the films that you want will be available will be available forever.
EDIT: made it easier to read, because this is an excellent post.

looks like people are running uncapped 5100's.
this place has some software and forums that might help.
they sell a modded 5100 kit with a preinstalled pin header, programmer, Software (on CD), and firmware.hxxp://www.tcniso.net/forum/
hxxp://www.tcniso.net/Nav/Software/from what i read elsewhere,
you can run a TFTP sever on your computer, login to the modem and tell the modem where to get the config file ( from your sever) then reboot and let it pull the config. that will stop the modem from pulling the wrong (lol) config file from your isp. get a MAC sniffer and use a MAC address thats not on your node and dont use your isp's mail servers or dns.
there is software for everything, including config file sniffers.
maybe some places to dl them, if you beg the right peopleβ¦lol.
again, just from what i read. i never uncapped before.
i cant find the other links now, but people are uncapping 5100's and the info is out there.how many options for broadband do you have?
at the very least, when you get caught, you will recieve an instant perma-ban from your isp.
worse case senario would be perma-ban + legal action.
i dont think its worth the risk.
4meg upload is tempting tho.- When 'surfing', stop/pause/reduce downloads and reduce upload to half ie 15Kb/sec. Doesn't effect your surfing speed plus it also helps your ratio.
i'd try leaving upload alone or at 80% first, then lower it later if you have to.
i leave mine at about 80% all the time and never have any slow downs.nice post.
congrats on fixing your ratio problem and thanks for your uploads.
