I never really did but then again never gave it any serious thought. So now I have; should I tell or just let things be?

It really depends on how often they bring up the subject.

If they bring it up a lot, then tell them.

It's dynasty's right not to believe in God just as it's someone else's right to believe. I say only bring it up if asked, but don't compromise yourself doing something you don't believe in to make others comfortable (like going to a church service)

It really depends on where you are and what your life is like.  Do you have a big social network outside of churches and really religious people where this sort of thing would matter?  Then sure, come out as atheist if you want.  But if you're still socially and financially dependent on friends and family who would be disturbed by your apostasy, then it's a risk.

You need to 'come out' as an atheist? I guess you must be American

His account shows Kenya.  It could be a VPN or proxy.

Africa is worse than the US when it comes to religion.

And Africa is much more proscriptive when it comes to legal prohibitions against homosexuality

For reasons of health and safety, though you may not believe in god, you may want to not reveal that unless you are in a place where you can live alone,be safe and not need any support from people who may have a fallout with you.

I agree…it depends on the situation. Is it a big part of life where you live? Is the subject ever present in your life? To what degree does the matter pressure you internally?

If you're surrounded by super religious people and don't have any friends, co-workers, etc that you can talk to about this, I'd stay quiet for sure. What kind of retaliation you could experience for that type of sentiment? Even non-violently, there can be serious consequences like ostracization and revocation of any financial assistance you may be receiving from family.

If you are independent, with friends and a support system outside of the faithful, maybe you're fine. Even in that case though, I'd only share it with people if they asked or really pushed you (in which case they probably already know anyway). I don't see the point in "coming out" as athiest, unsolicited. It's just something you are or aren't, a lot like being gay. No reason to hide it (if it's safe to do so) but no reason to trumpet it to the world if no one asks....

Why would you want to broadcast this new-found certainty of yours? How is it anyone else's business? Do you want to rub their nose in your Wise Correctness? Need opportunities to argue and justify your experience of undivine revelation? Is that really the only thing you can create a controversy about? What good would you expect to come of this announcement?

Be aware, also, that there really are parts of the world today in which alleged atheists are killed because Religion! It's in the news!

Assuming you eventually get around to taking a public stand, perhaps do a bunch of studying to this supposed career move will leave you a little less challenged than most people who don't pay much attention to all that glop but mostly just don't give a shit. Telling everyone helps them and you define yourself. What's the point of that? Don't you and they already define you in enough ways without adding that new category?

Yes, but pornofan these are generally in the Middle East. You certainly wouldn't 'trump' your atheism around in Iraq or Syria. Or for that matter, the UAE. Or maybe parts of the US 🙂

depending on who's asking, their reason for asking and what their preferred answer would be I think I'd rather claim to be atheist than be the 'wrong' religion or denomination in Iraq or Syria

as to the OP, your beliefs are a personal matter for you, it doesn't matter what other people think so you would hope it wouldn't matter if they know or not, however if you would risk being oppressed for your beliefs then it may be better to keep it quiet.
