So basically, I have been using uTor for ages. Never a problem. I recently paid for a VPN service through PIA. Seems to be working as intended, however, today, my upload speeds all dropped at the same time and my download speeds have also dropped a bit. I was hoping someone with VPN and uTor could either screenshot their connection settings and maybe give me some advice on the best way to increase my UL speeds again. I was connected to California but each time I connect to the net, I am automatically directed to a different country / IP address and i'm not sure which country would allow me the best speeds.

      My details:
      Latest uTor build
      windows 7 premium
Located in Australia (((North / East Coast)))
      Usual UL Speeds: 350kb/s +
      Usual DL Speeds: 1.5mbs - 2.5mb/s +
New UL Speed: 5kb/s there about
New DL Speed: 150kb/s there about

PIA is shit for Australia mate , i tried them a while back and the issues that you talk about are common
i use Buffered , a lot dearer than PIA but PIA is cheap for a reason

without my VPN i get 19.35Mbps  with it is 18.9Mbps

my utorrent is not showing any loss , but i am using the pro version

i tend not to worry alot about my UL speed as its , frankly shithouse all around for  Aussies , i just let stuff run there course

As a general rule, the use of a VPN may slow down your connection, especially if you're running a really super fast connection. There are 2 main reasons for this symptom…

          1. When using a VPN, there is a certain amount of overhead traffic that is required in order to be able to encrypt and decrypt the information through the virtual tunnel that you're using. This leaves a little less bandwidth on your connection available for the actual data stream itself. Also, the increased time that it takes to encrypt and decrypt the data stream being transmitted will also result in a slightly increased latency (or ping time).

          2. Most VPN services can only offer a limited throughput speed as compared to a higher end connection, such as a fiber connection. If you have a higher speed connection (as it appears that you do), your speeds will definitely take a hit when using most VPN services. That being said however, the decrease in speed in my opinion would be well worth the added privacy of not having your IP directly exposed to the internet.

Now, all of this being said, there are several reasonable options for a VPN service. Recently, I switched to PureVPN because my previous supplier (Hola) just wasn't able to meet my needs. I have personally found them to be quite reliable and consistent in offering service. They also seem to have a wider selection of servers in any given country than most VPN providers do. I would suggest checking them out at http://www.purevpn.net/ as they should be able to offer you a better speed solution compared to what you're currently getting with your current provider.

It's best to use one of the servers which allow file sharing, I doubt CA does (pretty sure). I use a NL server and my speeds are fine.
Also go into the advanced settings in the PIA client and enable port forwarding if you haven't. Mouse over the tray icon to get the port # PIA is using, then enter it into the utorrent connection settings. Don't port forward on your router if you use one, not needed. The port # will change each time you connect so you'll have to update it in uT.
