Athens: 10 police officers attack men for holding hands
Two young men have reportedly been attacked in Athens by up to 10 police officers after they were spotted holding hands.
Greek media reports the incident occurred on Friday 25 July.
It’s claimed George Kounanis and Harry Vassilakis were attacked by a group of ten uniformed Greek police.
According to the publication Lifo, after the two men objected to the verbal abuse of the officers, one of the policemen grabbed Mr Kounanis by the hand and shoved him against a nearby wall.
He was told this is “what real violence is”.
Mr Kounanis and Mr Vassilakis called an emergency helpline and were told to report the matter to Athens’s main police headquarters.
Mr Vassilakis said: “We feel as if we’re in a psychological maze. We feel totally helpless. We feel harassed by those who are supposed to protect us.”
Mr Kounanis is among hundreds of gay Greek citizens who have recently appealed to the European Court of Human Rights over the government’s decision to ignore an ECtHR ruling against its ban on same-sex couples from entering civil unions.

This is a sad news. I believe that love is universal. No body should stop us to show our love.
-
in the US they could sue the police dpt but I guess if they do it in Greece they won't get anything.
-
10 polices officers? :afr:
That police should be ashamed. How in the hell they deal with a lovely gay couple holding hands with full squad? Its a image of their cowardice.
-
Tht is so sad. I always thought Greece as a gay friendly country :cry2: :cry2:
-
It is sad to see how narrow-minded autorities can be. Hope the two victims won't feel guilty for their behaviour.
-
Dafuq? I thought Greece was nice.
10 :police: ???? dafraaaak!?
-
Srly, why!?
Just sick -
At the same time, many members of Greek government hated that fellow politician of theirs who tweeted bad about the prime minister of Luxembourg, but none of them voted yes for any law about gay marriage or against discrimination in Greece.
-
As a greek, i feel extremely shamed for this and i apologize on their behalf.
With this apology, i send this plea as well.
Not all of Greece is like that. Sure, we have many things to do but we are in a good road. Let's ignore this incident. -
Greece never fails to disappoint me. Its people are usually nice towards tourists and strangers because they want to seem nice and accepting. It's a whole different story about its own people.
-
When we feel welcome by a group of people, we welcome them and are nice. When we feel threatened, we are bad and very protective.
-
I feel so bad for them. Such cowards that group of 10 police are. They need a new career.

:cry2:
that' such a shame ! -
